Tahereh Ghoratolein

Fatimah Zarrin Taj Baraghani Ghazvini was born sometime between 1814 and 1817 in Muslin Shia family. She was intelligent and got educated. Early on she became attracted to Shaykhism (an Islamic Religious movement) and later became one of the first followers of Babism, and got her title as Tahirih Qurratu’l-Ayn. She was a passionate poet, and believing in equal rights between men and women, unveiled herself in a conference. She was then let to accusations of immorality and was eventually choked in the dead of the night, and flung into a well at the age of 33/34.

If ever get to see you, face to face,
I will appraise you of the sorrow of my longing; word by word, line by line

That I may see your face, like the wind I have searched house by house, door by door, street by street, town by town

In your absence blood flows from my heart through my eyes; sea by sea, river by river, creak by creak, stream by stream

Your love has been woven into my sorrowful heart, string by string, thread by thread, warp by warp, weft by weft

“Tahirih” saw no one but you as she searched deep into her heart, layer by layer,
page by page, veil by veil, fold by fold
