Sama is a Sufi worship ceremony, which often includes singing hymns, playing instruments, dancing, recitation of poetry and prayers, wearing symbolic attire, and other rituals. The dance or Sufi whirling is a form of active physical meditation, spinning one’s body in repetitive circles, with the right hand held open facing upward and the left hand facing downward. This is still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Molavi order, especially in Konia, Turkey, where Rumi is buried.
