Monotheistic Religions in IRAN

  • Zoroastrianism
Zoroaster (A Persian prophet) is believed to have been born possibly more than 3500 years in northern Iran close to the Caspian coast. This is the land, which some people believe to be the paradise, Airyanem Vaego, as one of the sixteen lands created by Ahura Mazda (God) as mentioned in the Avesta – Zoroaster’s holy book.
  • Islam
Islam was brought to Iran via Arab-Islamic conquest around 641 CE.
  • Shia Sect of Islam
In early Islamic history, the Shia were a movement -literally “Shiat Ali” or the “Party of Ali”. They claimed that Ali was the rightful successor to the Prophet Muhammad as leader (imam) of the Muslim community following his death in 632. Until the 16th century Persia was mostly Sunni. At the turn of that century, the Safavid dynasty conquered much of what is now Iran and made the Twelver Shiite branch—that follows Ali and 11 of his descendants/Imams believing the last one (Mehdi) disappeared and will reappear later; similar to the second coming of Christ—the official religion of Iran to differentiate it from the rest of the Islamic world, in particular from the Sunni Ottomans.
  • Other
The Islamic doctrines interpret Mohammad as the final prophet, hence ONLY Islam along with 3 pre-Islamic religions: Christianity, Judaism, and oroastrianism are considered official religions and the rest are heretics such as: Mithraism, Manichaeism, Mazdakisim, Bábism & the Baha i faith.
