Chahar – Shanbeh Souri
The famous Chaharshanbeh Souri (Wednesday celebration) is celebrated on the last Tuesday eve of the year. The tradition is before that night spring cleaning happens and all rubbish is burnt. So at sunset large bon fires are lit and people jump over them chanting (to the fire): Take my yellowness (winter sickness); give me your redness (Health). Some people cover themselves and go at other people’s houses banging spoons on pots and collect goodies (similar to trick or treat). Some stay home and munch on a bowl of dried nuts and fruits (Ajil e Moshgel Gosaha), chatting with friends and trying to solve their problems.
