Tea or Coffee – Trivia

Iranians drink a lot of tea. In some houses the Samavar is up and running all day long and into the night. And tea – brewed on top of it–is served in small dainty little glasses so the color, temperature and aroma are preserved perfectly….

A cup of tea has to be:

  • Filled to the rim (Lab por )
  • Hot (Lab suz )
  • Bitter (Lab duz )

Its interesting to know that Coffee made its way to Iran before tea! Coffee houses (Ghaveh Khaneh) were built in the Safavid era (17th century) with Coffee from Ethiopia.

And the Armenians introduced the Turkish coffee brewing style, in special cups. Turkish coffee was/is used for fortune telling.

Later Tea was introduced and cultivated in Iran in the Qhajar era (19th century) from India.

Although traditional coffee houses on the road sides serve tea in Iran, Coffee has made it’s come back in the French and Italian styles, in the cities.
