The yakhchal is an ancient evaporation cooler which has a two-fold meaning: yakh means “ice” and chal means “pit.” These ancient refrigerators were mainly built and used in Persia. The Persians had mastered the technique of building and using the yakhchal by 400 BCE.
Persian Qanat or Kariz/ Irrigation System
A qanat or kariz, is a gently sloping underground channel to transport water from an aquifer or water well to the surface for irrigation and drinking, acting as an underground aqueduct. According to most sources, qanat technology was developed in ancient Iran by the Persian people sometime in the early 1st millennium BCE and spread from there slowly westward and eastward.
